Frequently asked questions

What is the compound interest formula?

A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt), where P is the principal, r the annual rate as a decimal, n the compounding periods per year and t the number of years. Regular contributions add a future-value-of-an-annuity term.

How much does compounding frequency matter?

Less than most people expect. At 7% over 10 years, monthly compounding beats annual by roughly 2 percent of the final balance. Rate and time dominate.

Does this account for inflation or tax?

No. Results are nominal. To think in today's money, subtract your expected inflation rate from the interest rate to get a real return.
