About Sales Tax Calculator

Calculate tax in both directions: add a rate to a net price to get the total, or strip the tax out of a gross total to find the net amount and the tax portion. The reverse calculation is the one people most often get wrong, because you must divide rather than subtract.

How to use it

  1. Choose whether to add tax or remove it.
  2. Enter the amount and the tax rate.
  3. Read the net amount, the tax and the total.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove tax from a total?

Divide by 1 plus the rate. At 20% VAT, a 120 total has a net of 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100 and 20 of tax. Subtracting 20% from 120 gives 96, which is wrong.

What is the difference between sales tax, VAT and GST?

Sales tax is charged once at the final sale. VAT and GST are charged at every stage with businesses reclaiming what they paid. For a consumer working out a total, the arithmetic is identical.

Which rate applies to me?

It depends on your jurisdiction and the type of goods. This tool does no rate lookup — enter the rate that applies to your sale.
